Good information presented in a neutral manner can move policy.

From 2003 to 2018, the Long Island Index published objective data on important issues facing Long Island and opportunities that would stem from tackling those issues. It served as a status report on the Long Island region that aimed to engage the larger Long Island community in thinking about the region’s future and to be a catalyst for collective action.

Core to the concept was providing objective data, so that public discussion would be informed by an accepted set of facts that were beyond dispute. Key, too, was the Index’s Advisory Committee, a diverse group of Long Island leaders who ensured that a wide range of perspectives was considered as the Index determined the focus of its research.

The Long Island Index focused on key topics including the region’s economy, communities, health, education, environment, and governance. Its research and reports remain available at www.longislandindex.org.
